I'm sad to see that the Daily Mail will be running a week long recipe feature on Comfort Food, leading with the headline
Comfort food without the calories: Hearty one-pan dishes you can enjoy without piling on the pounds.
The insinuation here is that just because the dishes are lower in calories, the concept of eating for comfort is a healthy one.
The crazy thing here is if you run a quick search on comfort eating on the Mail's website, you will find lots of articles about the perils of eating for comfort. Headlines include
Are YOU a comfort eater? Expert says it could all be down to your childhood…but don't worry, there are ways to change.
Comfort eating: The new mental illness. You eat a biscuit - the can't stop until you finish the packet. Don't assume it's lack of willpower. Doctors now say it's a psychiatric condition that needs treatment.
So on the one hand we're encouraged to eat comfort food, then on the other hand we're told comfort eating is a mental illness. This nonsense needs to stop. The media needs to take a more sensible approach to recipe features and stop using the term comfort food as a hook to draw in readers.
